Katharinenkirche Nehesdorf

The Protestant St. Katharinen Church is a listed church building in the Nehesdorf district of the southern Brandenburg town of Finsterwalde in the Elbe-Elster district . The stone building from the second half of the 13th century is the oldest building in the urban area of Finsterwalde and is surrounded by a cemetery .

Building description and history

The Katharinenkirche in Nehesdorf was built in the second half of the 13th century as a rectangular field stone hall with a gable roof and a short nave. It has a retracted rectangular choir and a transverse tower in the west. The boarded tower top with roof turret dates from the middle of the 18th century. This has a tile-covered gable roof. The roof turret is crowned by a pyramid top with a weather vane. Another weather vane is located at the east end of the nave . This bears the year 1635.

When the capacity of the church became too small, it was to be replaced at the beginning of the 20th century by a new 500-seat church elsewhere, converted into a burial chapel and used as a mortuary . The project, which was almost ready to be realized, ultimately failed due to the beginning of the First World War .

The building underwent extensive reconstruction and renovation work in the second half of 2004, during which an early Gothic portal was exposed and redesigned in the area of the tower. A western vestibule originally placed in front of the tower, which was built in the 19th century in half-timbered construction, disappeared in the course of the work. The work cost around 65,000 euros, in the course of which the floor and windows were renovated, a bench heater was installed and the electrics were modernized. Further renovation work began in summer 2017. These concern the roof and masonry and, a little later, the tower.

To St. Catherine parish Finsterwalde and surrounding areas currently include the parishes Finsterwalde-Süd with green house and Pechhütte and Drößig , Staupitz and Sorno .

Equipment (selection)

The flat-roofed interior of the church is characterized by a three-sided gallery . Here is an altarpiece from the 17th century. An oval painting of the Last Supper can be seen in the predella . This possibly comes from Abraham Jäger, a cabinet maker from Finsterwalde. His creative period is dated between 1663 and 1714.

The polygonal pulpit dates from the 18th century. This was originally in the altar but was later separated from it.

In the church there is a 1956/57 from Frankfurt organ building company W. Sauer created organ . It has a pneumatic cone drawer , two manuals and eleven stops . The organ prospectus was built by Johann Christoph Schröther the Elder .
