St. Lukas Chapel in Konau

The St. Lukas Chapel is located in the village of Konau in the municipality of Amt Neuhaus in the Lower Saxony district of Lüneburg . The chapel , named after the Evangelist Lukas , is the only new church ever that was allowed to be built in the restricted area of the GDR .

location

The St. Lukas Chapel is located at the south-western entrance to the villages of Konau and Popelau, which together form a single marshland village . The free-standing chapel is located on a meadow. The Elbe runs a few hundred meters west of the chapel.

history

There was a village chapel in the same place as early as the 17th century. After this was completely destroyed when a dike on the nearby Elbe broke, services were first held in the mayor's houses and later in the former prayer room of the village school. In 1948, services were banned during the occupation . In 1950, the Hagenow District School Board had the entire church inventory removed from the school. The parish of Konau-Popelau and the neighboring parish of Stapel then campaigned for a new chapel to be built.

In March 1953, the building permit for the St. Luke Chapel was granted. It was made possible by donations from the population and support from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover . The bricks required for the construction, a total of around 50,000 pieces, had to be delivered by ship from Brandenburg at excessive prices . The local population played a key role in the construction. The inauguration took place on March 31, 1957 with the participation of West German visitors.

In 1996 the chapel was restored.

The chapel now also contains an exhibition on the recent history of the villages of Konau and Popelau.

architecture

The St. Lukas Chapel is a brick building with a rectangular floor plan. The hall church has a covered with red bricks gable roof . The main entrance is in the middle of the northern brickwork between two small windows. In the area of the gable triangle of the north facade above the main entrance, bricks that stand out in a darker color form a larger Latin cross .

The interior is simply designed. The walls are painted white, the wooden pews are red. The wooden ceiling is supported by cross beams. The carved altar stands in a choir , which is surrounded by a round arch made of bricks.

Furnishing

In the chapel there is a winged altar made by the woodcarver Franz Erben. The middle picture shows the crucifixion of Jesus. The cross clearly towers above the winged altar.
