Church of the Holy Apostle James (lit. Jonavos Šv. Apaštalo Jokūbo bažnyčia ) is a Catholic neoclassical church in Jonava ( Kaunas district ), on the right bank of the Neris , built in 1793. The founder is Joseph Kasimir Korwin Kossakowski (1738–1794), bishop of Livonia . Pastor is dean of Jonava Audrius Mikitiukas.

Address: 13 Vilniaus St., next to Jonava Monastery (11 Vilniaus St.).

history

In 1750 the wooden church in Jonava was built by Marija Kosakovskienė (Zabielaitė) (1711–1776), but it later burned down. The Marian Monastery was founded around 1775 . By 1782 the Marians founded a community school. Instead of Marians, the Trinitarians were invited to Jonava in 1791.

From 1791 to 1793 the church and monastery were built and expanded (as suspected, according to the project by the Lithuanian architect Laurynas Gucevičius ). The church got three aisles.

In 1827 the Trinitarians were expelled from Jonava by the government. The soldiers settled in the monastery until 1894. In 1832 the monastery was formally closed. In 1830 the church preached mostly Polish and sometimes Lithuanian.

In 1851 the monastery was remounted. After the great fire in the town of Jonava in 1904, which almost endangered the church, the monastery building was sold to the parish in 1908. In 1905 there was also the Lithuanian mass every second Sunday. In 1907 the building was handed over to the parish.

From 1922 Petras Vaitiekūnas (1891-1946), licentiate in canon law, was pastor of the parish. He was later elected mayor of Jonava (1937-1940).
