Simon Kossakowski ( Polish Szymon Marcin Kossakowski , lit. Simonas Kosakovskis , * 1741 in the Šilai estate near Jonava ; †  April 24, 1794 in Vilnius ) was a representative of the Polish-Lithuanian noble family Kossakowski , the last Lithuanian grand hetman , lieutenant general in the service of the Tsarist Russia , supporter of the Bar Confederation and the Targowica Confederation .

Life

Simon Kossakowski was in Jesuits -Kollegium Kaunas trained. He then studied at the University of Königsberg .

In 1762 Kossakowski began his service with the Prince of Courland , Karl von Sachsen , in Mitau , in whose service he fought against the Russian troops . During the Sejm von Repnin in 1767/68 he sharply criticized the king for his pro-Russian stance and centralistic aspirations. Subsequently he was a member of the Sejm delegation, which Catherine II was supposed to ask for a guarantee for the preservation of Poland. In 1768 he took part in the anti-Russian movement Confederation of Bar and organized combat groups for the uprising in Lithuania.

After the failed independence movement, Kossakowski turned to Russia. In 1790 he became a volunteer in the Russian army and took part in the 6th Russo-Turkish War . For his services he was promoted to major general during the war , then to lieutenant general.

Kossakowski was an opponent of the constitution of May 3, 1791 and helped the tsarist government in the organization of the Targowica Confederation in 1792. He also supported Russian politics after the Polish-Lithuanian uprising in 1794.

On April 24, 1794, he was hanged by insurgents as a traitor to Lithuania in the Town Hall Square in Vilnius . He was buried in the mausoleum of the Church of St. James the Apostle in Jonava .
