St. Benedict Abbey in Still River , Massachusetts , United States , is a Benedictine monastery with five brothers and seven priests, which has set itself the task of administering the Liturgy of the Hours and the Tridentine Mass .

history

The Saint Benedict Center began as a student center in an old furniture store in Harvard Square on the corner of Bow Street and Arrow Street in 1941 , just half a block from Harvard Yard. Opposite was the romantic facade of St. Paul Church , the famous university church of Cambridge.

The center was founded by Catherine Goddard Clarke, Avery Dulles , then a law student, and Christopher Huntington, Dean of Harvard. Catherine Clarke founded the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary , Avery Dulles entered the Jesuit order and later became a cardinal , and Christopher Huntington, who became a priest in Long Island , New York .

The monks follow the Regula Benedicti and are members of the Benedictine Confederation .

Canonical recognition

Leonard Feeney later became director of the Saint Benedict Center. The center came into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church because of Feeney's particular interpretation of extra ecclesiam nulla salus . This also led to an unclear status of the community. In 1975 the center was recognized as an association of believers . In 1980 the community became a Benedictine priory in the Swiss-American Congregation . In 1990 it became independent and in 1993 it became a full-fledged abbey with Gabriel Gibbs OSB as the first abbot.
