St. Christophorus Neuendettelsau

St. Christophorus is an Evangelical-Lutheran chapel in Neuendettelsau named after St. Christopher .

History

The chapel was built in 1905 according to the plans of Georg Heim as a new liturgical center for the mentally handicapped who lived in the homes of the deaconess institution , because the old Laurentiuskirche was too small for the growing number of residents and deaconesses. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1905.

After World War II it was agreed that the number of Catholics in Neuendettelsau, which had risen sharply due to war refugees, would be allowed to celebrate their Sunday mass there. This offer was used until the St. Francis Church was built in 1962.

Building description

The chapel has a long house with a rectangular floor plan and a gable roof and in the east a recessed 5/8 choir extension with a hipped roof. The nave has five axes of arched windows on the south and north sides, with the middle axis on the south side being replaced by an arched portal. On the west side there is a round arch portal, above it an ox eye and a small roof turret showing the Christ monogram . The choir extension has arched windows on three sides with stained glass depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. There is a round arch portal to the left and right of the choir. The outer facade is provided with plaster structure on all sides. The building has only modest stylistic features of neo-Romanesque and neoclassicism .

The interior of the single-nave hall closes with a flat wooden ceiling. On the east side it is connected to the choir by an arched arcade. Above the arcade is the inscription: “Come to me, all of you who are troublesome and burdened” ( Mt 11:28  EU ). The Altarmensa stands in the choir.
