St. Cyriac

The Catholic parish church of St. Cyriakus is a listed church building in Bottrop , an independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia . The patron saint of the church is the martyr Cyriacus .

history

The community was founded in 1155, belonging to the Deutz monastery , as a branch church of St. Pankratius in Oberhausen-Osterfeld. The first chapel was a round building, followed in 1425 by a nave with a tower and choir. She was raised to a parish in the 17th century. In the 19th century the nave and tower were demolished and replaced by the current church. In 1950 the building was elevated to the status of a provost church .

architecture

In 1850, under the direction of Pastor Karl Englert, a building committee was founded to raise funds for a new building. Emil von Manger , a well-known architect and diocesan master builder, made the construction plans.

The neo-Gothic hall church of five bays with retracted 5/8 Choir was from 1859 to 1862 in brick built -Sichtmauerwerk with stone formations. The building is 43.50 meters long and 22 meters wide, the roof ridge is 25 and the tower 57 meters high. From 1923 to 1928, under the direction of Josef Franke , instead of three parallel gable roofs, a uniform roof was put on. At the same time extensions were added. From 1904 to 1964 the church sank by up to 7 meters due to subsidence . The building was severely damaged and security was no longer guaranteed. The vault was underpinned in 1966 by an eggshell made of reinforced concrete in a layer about seven cm thick. The process is called the Torkret blow molding process. In the same year the chancel was redesigned.

Breil organ

The Propsteikirche St. Cyriakus has a four manual organ made by Franz Breil from Dorsten in 1970. The 2843 pipes are distributed over 39 sounding registers . The organ console has been laid out with four manuals in order to play the choir organ on the high altar from the fourth manual of the main console on the organ stage. Corresponding registers, flaps and switches for the choir organ are installed on the main console. However, the project to connect the main console and the choir organ was not completed, so that there is still no connection between the two organs.
