St. Cyriakus (Weeze)
The parish church of St Cyriac is the Catholic Church in Weeze and it's the St. Cyriakus ordained a deacon , who in 303 in Rome the martyr died. He is counted among the fourteen helpers in need.
history
A parish church in Weeze with the patronage of St. Cyriakus was mentioned for the first time in 1225.
A small wooden church is documented as early as the 9th century. The Romanesque and then early Gothic predecessor buildings were followed in the 15th century by a new building with an elongated east choir, transept and tower. Since then, Sankt Cyriakus has been a particularly beautiful building from the late Gothic style of the Lower Rhine region.
For the church and its surroundings in February 1945 were shelling the allies and the demolition of the tower by German troops devastating. Only the Gothic east choir was preserved. Large parts of the interior were destroyed.
The current church was built between 1953 and 1955, with the architect Bernhard Kösters from Münster including the preserved late Gothic choir and the two polygonal sides of the transept in his planning. However, the remaining damaged components were removed. Unlike its predecessor, the new tower was built on the side of the aisle.
Furnishing
The important works of art of the church, especially wood carvings, were previously outsourced and have therefore been preserved in their best parts. Some beautiful wooden sculptures decorate the church interior today. It even contains information for pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela . Above all, the seated figure of St. James (around 1500) and a neo-Gothic statue of the apostle should be mentioned here. The most precious sculptures include the “lovely Madonna von Weeze” around 1350, St. Cyriacus and “God the Father”, both around 1500.
The glass pictures of the windows were designed by Joachim Klos and executed in 1998 by the glass painter Hein Derix in Kevelaer .
organ
The organ was built by Sauer in Höxter in 2006 . The arrangement of the works offers optimal sound radiation from all registers in the church.
