St. Dionysius Thülen is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Brilon town of Thülen . She belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Church patron is Dionysius of Paris . The church building is built as a pillar basilica ; the church is one of the oldest in the Brilon area.

History and architecture

The church was first mentioned in 1175; its origin is dated earlier. It was one of the 1031 branch churches belonging to the original parish Hallinghausen . Between 1146 and 1183 it was made a parish . In the 13th century the tower was added in place of a previous tower. The building is a two-bay, Romanesque pillar basilica in a bound system. The choir is rectangular with a semicircular apse. Around 1900 the tower was reinforced by a mighty wall template into which a portal in Romanesque forms was embedded. The stone organ stage and the sacristy on the south side of the choir also date from this period. The central nave walls were pushed outwards by the dome-like cross vaults. The church was extensively restored between 1975 and 1977. In 1999 it was restored again. The main entrance is in the west by the tower. A side entrance is in the south. There are five bells in the tower; four of them can be rung mechanically. Another bell, which is rung for change , is located in the roof turret.

Extensive renovations were made in 1976 and 2011. Walls and vaults were repaired and painted. The organ was cleaned and re-voiced. The outdoor area was redesigned.

Furnishing

  • The three-storey high altar in cartilage style was erected in 1842, according to the inscription. Originally it was in the church of the Cistercian convent in Welver . The main picture, an oil painting between double columns, shows the Descent from the Cross. In the side shell niches there are figures of Saints Paul and Dionysus . The gable picture in an octagonal frame shows St.  Dominic receiving the rosary . The entire structure was composed of parts from different eras. The tabernacle was carved in Oberammergau in 1925 .
  • The six-sided pulpit was built in the 17th century. The four evangelists are shown in shell niches on four sides of the parapet . The ribs of the arched pulpit floor end in a grape cone. On the cover is a figure of the Archangel Michael .
  • An ornate marble baptismal font dates from the middle of the 17th century. The square basin with a round insert and a copper lid has the shape of a Romanesque cube capital . It is supported by a square pillar in the center and by slender columns at the corners. The total height is 1.68 m.
