The St. Elisabeth Church is a Roman Catholic church in Garitz , Bavaria , a district of the spa town of Bad Kissingen in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen .

The church, consecrated to St. Elisabeth of Thuringia , is one of two churches in Garitz; The St. Nepomuk Church was built in 1747 .

history

A church building fund created in 1871 showed an amount of 39,000 gold marks in 1895 . Despite the founding of the Garitz parish, there was no progress due to the Second World War until the Würzburg cathedral master builder Hans Skull , on the one hand, selected the site of the "Suckfüll-Eissees" near the intersection of the bypass road - Schönbornstrasse for the construction of a new church, and on the other in 1968 a church committee was founded to negotiate with the episcopal ordinariate in Würzburg.

Construction began on June 21, 1972; on July 30 of the same year the foundation stone was laid, which was blessed by Dean Wilhelm Zirkelbach . The foundation stone contains a copper case containing an edition of the Saale-Zeitung from July 29, 1972, an edition of the Sunday paper from July 30, 1972, a DM coin, an Olympic coin and a parchment certificate.

The consecration of the St. Elisabeth Church took place on September 16, 1973 under the Würzburg Bishop Josef Stangl . In this context, the relics of St. Burkard and St. Innocent transferred to the altar.

The St. Elisabeth Kindergarten , which is located next to the church and operated by the St. Johannes Association , was inaugurated on October 13, 1974, after the kindergarten had already started on October 1, 1974.

In front of the church there is a wayside shrine dated to 1700. It belongs to the Bad Kissingen architectural monuments and is registered under the number D-6-72-114-172 in the Bavarian monument list . On a structural unit comprising a plinth , base and column is on a fighter a round-arched final top board. The top panel shows reliefs of the Pietà or St. Martin and on their narrow sides St. Barbara or St. Andreas . The date of the year "1700" is on the fighter. The wayside shrine was restored in 1826 and 1897.

At the same time as the church was built, the Franconian artist Max Walter from Vasbühl created the modern cross in front of the church. The four-meter-high cross encloses a crown of thorns, is made of cast aluminum and is intended as a symbol for God's sanctuary, which is intended to encourage temporary viewers to contemplate. It was consecrated on Boxing Day 1973 by Pastor Arno Stöcklein.

Furnishing

In the church there is a wooden Pietà and a wooden statue of Our Lady, both of which were made around 1800. Both sculptures belong to the Bad Kissingen architectural monuments and are registered under the number D-6-72-114-172 in the Bavarian monument list .

The church also houses a sculpture of the church's patroness, St. Elisabeth of Thuringia .
