St. Francis in Bonn

St. Franziskus is a Catholic branch church in the northern part of Bonn , which belongs to the parish of St. Petrus . It is on the corner of Adolfstrasse and Georgstrasse (address: Adolfstrasse 77). The church stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The church was built from 1960 to 1962 as the parish church of the St. Franziskus parish, founded in 1952, based on a design by the Cologne architects Karl Band and Werner Fritzen. The parsonage, which was built in 1954, and its chapel were included in the new building, the latter being converted into a sacristy . In 1964 the free-standing bell tower of the church was completed (without bells), a kindergarten and a youth home. The ground plan of the church is that of an elongated rectangle. The vault resembles the shape of a tent. An extensive gallery extends into the nave . The baptistery is located in a tower-like extension in the east of the church, the choir , which forms a triangle on the west side. The last renovation of the church took place in 2000.

In the early 1990s, St. Francis lost its parish church status. The community was dissolved and merged with St. Mary in 2000 . The latter became part of the new parish of St. Petrus Bonn-Mitte in 2010. Since then, the now branch church and the former parish house have housed the city youth pastoral care , which operates under the name Campanile . In the church there are church services on weekdays and on weekends youth masses and the masses of the Coptic congregation .

In March 2018, an approximately three meter high sandstone cross was erected on the outer wall of St. Francis, which comes from the Immerather parish church of St. Lambertus ("Immerather Dom") , which had been demolished two months earlier . The cross came to Bonn on the initiative of Curt Delander .
