In the middle of the 15th century, Hans Kielholt described in a chronicle for the oldest time tho Norder Lyst ene kleene Kerk ok een preacher with the name Sunt Jürgen , the Low German form of the name of St. George . This church was probably connected with the town of Alt-List, which was lost in 1362. Up until the 19th century, remains of the wall could still be found in the dunes near List. The ruin of the church served the Lister residents as a quarry, the monastery-sized wall stones, the so-called Munksteene ("monk stones"), were reused. Jens Booysen reported in 1826 in his book Description of the island of Sylt :

“About 1/8 mile SW of this village (= List) I saw remains of masonry in my youth, 48 to 50 years ago, almost on the spot where the Church of List, which was demolished in 1362, is said to have stood , and which place is still called Kirk-Sted or Kirchstelle. Up until a few years ago, it was customary to bury the corpses driven near List or on the beach. "

Until the middle of the 19th century, the Lister drove either to Keitum or Römö to worship, officially List belonged to the parish of Keitum. The way to the church in Romo took about three hours of sailing. Since the Jutes, who had lived in List for centuries, were enemies with the Sylt Frisians, they mostly accepted the route to Römö.

In the middle of the 19th century, a church hall was built in List together with the schoolhouse, which was under the supervision of the pastor in Keitum. The services were held by the teachers.

Today's St. Jürgen Church was built as a garrison church for the Seefliegerhorst and naval base List. Pastor Harung consecrated it on October 27, 1935. The building has served the Evangelical Lutheran parish of List since 1948 as a room for church services. The chancel was rebuilt in the 1970s, and the interior was painted in strong colors. During the restoration work in the period from 1999 to 2002, subsequent fixtures were taken back, the original character of the interior was restored and the chancel was adapted to modern needs.
