St. Johann Baptist is the Roman Catholic parish church of Herrenstrunden . The church emerged from a chapel belonging to a commander of the Johanniter .

history

The Johanniterkommende in Herrenstrunden was created as a branch of the Kommende in Schloss Burg in the 13th century. An express documentary mention of the coming can be found in the year 1277, when Herkerode is mentioned. The commander was probably briefly in neighboring Herkenrath , the parish church there was later owned by the commander in Herrenstrunden. In the following period, the castle and Herrenstrunden were mostly united in the hands of a commander. In 1328 the Coming Party was raised to the Ballei , which united the Coming ones in Burg, Solingen, Düren, Duisburg and Walsum. In 1806 the Ballei was abolished.

architecture

The core of today's plastered church consists of a rectangular chapel built around 1345, which was fundamentally changed in 1555. In 1904 there was a neo-Gothic extension to the east to include a transept and choir. The originally flat ceiling of the chapel was replaced by a wooden barrel in 1911 . The circular pane of the central window in the south wall is marked 1556; it shows Komtur Joachim Sparr von Trampe. Under the western half of the old chapel there is a crypt with four cross vaults on a simple central pillar.

monument

The church was entered as No. 29 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
