The Roman Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist is a late Gothic hall church in the Oberdietfurt district of Massing in the Rottal-Inn district in Lower Bavaria . It belongs to the parish of Massing in the deanery Eggenfelden in the diocese of Regensburg .

History and architecture

The church in Oberdietfurt was built as a late Gothic brick building at the end of the 15th century. With the exception of the roof frieze on the choir, the exterior architecture is completely free of decorative shapes and shows no buttresses. In the west, the mighty, undivided tower is in front, which is closed with a renewed gable roof between stepped gables. The sacristy is built on the south side of the choir . Restorations took place in the years 1880–1896, 1917–1920, 1956–1977 and 1986/1987.

The nave is designed as a four- bay staggered hall with differently designed and proportioned side aisles, the northern part of which is slightly wider and lower than the southern part. In contrast, the central nave is deliberately designed to compensate for the spatial relationships. The width corresponds roughly to the ship's height. Unlike the structures of Eggenfelden , jam roof and Unterdietfurt the space parts are separated by longitudinally octagonal pillars, the kämpferlos pass into the wide Scheid fluted arcs. An almost square central nave is separated by the arched gallery in the west yoke. The broadly proportioned central nave vault shows a star-like rib figure, which is underlaid with the conical shape. Double-stepped star-shaped polygonal consoles take up the vault ribs. It is possible that the individual forms were changed in the 19th century. The side aisle vaults vary the vault figure of the central nave on a steeper vault floor and rest on simpler star consoles.

The two-bay choir at the height of the nave ends in a five-eighth end . It is separated from the central nave by a pronounced, recessed choir arch . The protruding shield arches on the side walls are based on circular services. The axes are very narrow and higher than in the longhouse. This creates the puncture caps that cut deep into the vault . The rib network is formed from a star figure, which is best visible in the polygon closure.

Murals

During the last renovation, the vault ribs were removed in light purple imitation cubes based on findings from a version from the Rococo period. Wall paintings from 1765 by Antoni Scheitler have been preserved on the longitudinal walls of the choir and on the vaulted shield surfaces of the central nave. In the choir, scenes from the life of John and pictures of the apostles can be found in rocailles . The apostles cycle continues in the central nave.

Furnishing

The high altar, designed by Paul Weiß, dates from 1880, but contains two valuable reliefs from the early 16th century. They show the birth of John the Baptist and his sermon in the desert and have been heavily painted over. The outer sides of the wings show Nazarene paintings with the flagellation and the crowning of thorns of Christ from the middle of the 19th century, but in any case earlier than the altar structure. The side altar in the north aisle shows paintings of Saints Stephanus and Laurentius , Nikolaus and Wolfgang , which date from around 1520. The fine coloring is remarkable ; the gold background was probably renewed. Several late Gothic wooden figures are placed on the nave pillars and on the gallery balustrade.

Three glass paintings in the choir windows were delivered in 1881 by the Zettler court glass factory in Munich.
