The church in Mainbernheim

The Church of St. John the Baptist is the parish church of the Catholic community in Mainbernheim, Lower Franconia, on Goldgrubenweg on the edge of the historic old town. It belongs to the dean's office in Kitzingen .

history

A church in the village was first mentioned as the own church of the Counts of Castell , which received its own pastor around 1300 and thus rose to become a parish church. With the arrival of the Margraves of Ansbach-Bayreuth as city lords, the Reformation was introduced in Mainbernheim and the church was converted into an Evangelical Lutheran place of worship.

In the first half of the 20th century a larger number of Catholics settled in Mainbernheim again. A church building association was founded in 1927 and the foundation stone was laid for the new church on August 21, 1932; Hans Rost from Würzburg was engaged as the master builder . The church consecration took over in 1933 Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried . The church was thoroughly renovated in 1968 and 1982/83. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments lists the Johanneskirche as an architectural monument .

architecture

The east-facing church presents itself as a small hall building . The tower built on the south side is rectangular and has small rows of windows in the basement, it closes with a pyramid helmet and now houses the sacristy . The church and tower are made of exposed limestone masonry, the nave has three rows of windows. Two coat of arms reliefs with the Franconian rake and the coat of arms of Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried were attached as portal supports.

Further equipment

Shortly after the church was consecrated in 1933, the first fittings came into the interior of the small church. The Glattbach artist Alois Bergmann-Franken created the altar, the altar fresco and a crucifixion group. The baptismal font from 1854 with a figure of the church patron Johannes came from the parish of Rödelsee, to which Mainbernheim was to become a branch in the future. The fourteen Stations of the Cross date from the 20th century. A tabernacle shows the relief of the Lord's Supper.
