history

The namesake of the house of God is the Evangelist John . The Romanesque style church was first mentioned on July 23, 1123. This church no longer exists, but the remains of its walls have been preserved on the first floor of the tower. Between 1250 and 1260 the church was rebuilt in the early Gothic style. The raised half-timbered tower is from the 18th century.

The nave was built slightly to the north opposite the church tower . The arched portals date from around 1600. The rectangular windows are from around 1781.

The baroque altar wall was designed around 1701 by an unknown master with stone reliefs, motif panels and oil paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. They represent members of the Berlepsch family and the founder of the ornithological station .

The ringing consists of three bells . The small bell was cast in 1430, the middle one in 1610 and the large one in 1925.

The organ of Wilhelm Rühlmann was built in 1909 and in 2004 by Orgelbau Waltershausen restored. It has 23 registers , which are distributed over two manuals and pedal .
