history

History and naming

In 885 Wolfhart von Hünikon bequeathed his property to the St. Gallen Monastery on the condition that a church be built in Bussnang. This was the first predecessor of today's Evangelical Church in Bussnang . It was one of the oldest churches or parishes in the canton of Thurgau. The church was dedicated to St. Gallus , the parish stretched over a huge area between Ottoberg and Nollen . After Bussnang had converted to the new faith in 1528 , decades of disputes followed with a Catholic minority who had stayed in the village. From 1583 onwards, Catholics were allowed to hold Catholic services in the church. Until 1935 the church was used simultaneously . From then on, the parity church was reserved entirely for the Reformed, and from then on the Catholics attended the services in the newly built St. Joseph's Church.

Development and construction history

After the Catholics of Bussnang decided to build their own church in the 1930s, the expressionist architect Otto Linder , who came from the Stuttgart school , could be won over for the design . The church was built in 1934–1935 by the St. Gallen architect Aufdermaur. For the time 300 souls scoring a modern community of that time church room was created, which, thanks to donations altars in stucco marble, stained glass windows by Andreas Kübele and a high altar - Fresco received by Fritz Kunz. In 1976 the interior of the church was redesigned, with the high altar fresco also being covered with a layer of plaster.

Building description

Exterior and bells

Erected in the immediate vicinity of the Evangelical Church of St. Gallus, the Catholic Church rises on a hill between the Thur and the center of Bussnang. The expressionist building, on whose round tower the sound openings take up the shape of the church window, can be seen from afar. The bell chamber hides a four-part chime that matches the bells of the Protestant church, which were newly cast in 1936. The Catholic Church has four bells that sound in the sequence c` e` g` a`. The bells of the Catholic Church were cast in Staad near Rorschach SG in 1936 .

The St. Joseph's Church is a central building , the floor plan of which is similar to a four-leaf clover. Visitors enter the church through one of the two doors under a canopy.

Interior and artistic equipment

The furnishing of the Church of St. Joseph was designed in two phases. The glass windows by Andreas Kübele come from the construction time of the church. The stained glass windows are in the expressionist style and contain the 14 stations of the cross . There is a flat ceiling above the main room , which is designed with round structures. The chancel and the church lighting were created in 1976. The altar takes up the circular elements of the ceiling. The warm colors of the walls and the wooden elements of the furnishings give the interior a friendly feel.

organ

Schamberger organ from 1962

In the Church of St. Joseph, a simple harmonium was initially used , later an electronic organ. In 1962 the church received its organ, an instrument by Georges Schamberger from Uster . The originally 17-register instrument was expanded by two registers in 1967: bassoon 16 ′ in the pedal and trumpet 8 ′ in the swell. Since the sound of the instrument was not satisfactory, an application was made to the parish in 2008 to procure an electronic organ. Since this was rejected, the existing pipe organ was restored.
