The Evangelical Church Bussnang is a historic and listed Evangelical - Reformed church in Bussnang in the Thurgau .

founding

The church in Bussnang, which did not yet exist, was first documented on August 15, 885 as a foundation of Wolfhart von Hünikon . He bequeathed his entire property to the St. Gallen monastery . He linked this to the condition that a church be built in Bussnang with this fortune. The building was made entirely of wood and built under the patronage of Gallus on the elevation to Pussanhanc ( anc = pasture, Pusso = name of the founder who made the square arable).

New buildings

The small wooden church was the only Christian sacred building between Ottoberg and Nollen . It was only later that branch churches and parishes in Weinfelden , Wertbühl and Wuppenau were separated .

In 1123 the wooden structure was replaced by a massive stone church. This in turn gave way to a late Gothic new building in 1423. The expansion of the choir with tracery windows and a sacrament house by the Komtur von Tobel , a baron of Bussnang , was also inspired by the late Gothic in 1484 .

reformation

In 1528 Bussnang accepted the Reformation under Pastor Niklaus . There followed decades of disputes regarding the use of the church, as there was a Catholic minority in the village . In 1583, the Catholic faithful were allowed to hold mass in the church at certain times. Until the 1930s, the old church was used as a simultaneous church by both denominations . In 1934–1935, next to the Evangelical Church, according to plans by the Expressionist architect Otto Linder, the Catholic Church of St. Joseph was built and the previous one was completely transferred to the Reformed and completely redesigned into a Protestant preaching church . The church tower was raised by five meters and given a new bell.

The church was last renovated in 1990/91.

Church organization

Bussnang forms an independent Reformed parish within the Dean's Office II: Weinfelden of the Evangelical Church of the Canton of Thurgau .
