Chapel of St. Joseph

The St. Joseph Chapel in Schweinlang in the Kraftisried municipality in the Ostallgäu district is a church built in 1681.

According to an inscription on the predella of the altar, the chapel was built after a request to build a Eulogius chapel was rejected in 1668. The chapel was probably extended by two axes to the east at the beginning of the 18th century; At the same time, the eastern axis of the choir was converted into a sacristy and staircase with a semicircular apse that is still recognizable today , so that the interior of the chancel ends in a straight niche to the east.

In the niche is the chancel altar from the time the church was built and bordered by two blue winding columns entwined with vine leaves. In 1981, the altar was again the original altarpiece , the holy Joseph shows that Mary , the baby Jesus giveth. A contemporary view of the village of Schweinlang is shown below the Holy Family . The altar is flanked by statues of Mary's parents, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne .

The two side altars have altar leaves from the late 18th century. The left shows the Jesuit missionary Franz Xavier as patron saint of the sick and dying, the right shows Saint Leonhard as the patron saint of prisoners.

On the south wall of the choir hangs a painting of Joseph's death made in 1886 by the Unterthingau painter Andreas Mayr , which was used as the altarpiece of the main altar from the end of the 19th century to 1981. On the inner walls there is a Way of the Cross in oil on canvas from the second half of the 18th century. The painted wooden panel ceiling, the setting of which dates from the time the chapel was built, is striking.
