Andreas Mayr (born November 30, 1820 in Unterthingau ; † November 12, 1893 ibid) was a German church and history painter in the art style of the Nazarenes .

Life

Mayr's great teacher was Johann Baptist Schraudolph . With him he received his training at the Munich Royal Art Academy . From 1846 to 1853 Andreas Mayr was also Schraudolph's employee on the cardboard boxes for the painting of the Imperial Cathedral in Speyer . Then he worked in the Royal Court Art Institute for glass painting in Munich. He provided six templates for glass paintings for St. Paul's Church in Cambridge . After he had gained great fame everywhere abroad and had undertaken a long journey to Italy, he was drawn back to his father's house. From 1862 Andreas Mayr, who was characterized by deep religiousness, lived again in his hometown Unterthingau (studio in the middle room on the upper floor of house no. 87½, now Kemptener Straße 12). From here he carried out a large number of orders, mainly for churches in the Ostallgäu . That he was also a sought-after portrait painter became clear at an exhibition on the occasion of Johann Georg Schilling's 150th birthday in 1929. At that time, no less than 58 portrait pictures painted by him could be shown in the Unterthingau “Hirsch” inn (including two self-portraits), as well as religious representations, drafts and sketches, but only very few pictures with “secular” content. The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren owns several pictures by Andreas Mayr. There are also two portraits of his mother Creszentia Mayr on display, one of them dated 1838, i.e. painted by the 18-year-old - Mayer was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .

Andreas Mayr's brother Ulrich, a trained goldsmith and sculptor, a disciple of Schwanthaler, married the daughter Anna of the aforementioned Unterthingau history painter Johann Georg Schilling (1779–1839).
