The Roman Catholic branch church St. Sebastian is a late Gothic, Baroque-style hall church in the Burk district of Marktoberdorf in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu . It belongs to the parish of St. Michael Bertoldshofen in the Marktoberdorf deanery of the diocese of Augsburg .

History and architecture

Knight Heinrich Fraß founded a parish in Burk in 1325, which was assigned to the newly established parish of Bertholdshofen in 1444 by the Augsburg bishop Peter von Schaumberg .

The church, built around 1500, which received a letter of indulgence in 1508 , was redesigned in Baroque style in 1744 and extended westward in 1835. The building is a flat-roofed hall building with a drawn-in, three-sided closed choir, which is provided with buttresses on the outside and a barrel vault with stitch caps on the inside . In the north there is a tower with a gable roof and cloverleaf arch friezes , the structure of which is structured by a battlement similar to that of the Martinskirche in Kaufbeuren . The sound openings are partly designed as triforias . The sacristy is built on the south side of the nave and a vestibule to the west.

In the choir, foliage and bandwork stucco from 1744 with early rocaille shapes have been preserved. The frescoes, probably executed at the same time, are attributed to Johann Heel . In the choir, St. Sebastian is depicted as an intercessor over the village. On the parapet of the gallery, newly built in 1744, there are depictions of scenes from the life of the saint.

Furnishing

The altars were created in 1744 by the altar chistler Gottlieb Dopfer and decorated with paintings by Andreas Mayr from 1868. Saint Sebastian is depicted in the main altar and Salvator mundi in the extract from the altar . The left side altar shows St. George , the right side St. Wendelin . The putti of the main altar were created in 1744 by Ignaz Hillenbrand from Türkheim . In the excerpt from the right side altar, a figure of St. Valentine from around 1500 was reused. In the excerpt from the left side altar, Archangel Michael is depicted as weighing the soul.

The pulpit is a work of the early 18th century. Two paintings, probably from Augsburg from around 1760/1770, show depictions of the Heart of Mary (right) and the Heart of Jesus (left). Below these are three small pictures of the Way of the Cross in rocaille form and frame. A figure of St. Sebastian was created by Hillenbrand in 1744. A Pietà from the late 17th century in a niche under the gallery is attributed to Johann Ludwig Ertinger. The organ has a prospect in late baroque forms. The crucifix opposite the pulpit dates from the 17th century, the Mater Dolorosa is an addition from the late 19th century.
