history
As early as the 1st century AD, the Romans led a road through today's Durach area and also built a small settlement here. The Kempten Monastery was founded in 752 , and Durach belonged to its domain for more than a millennium until the secularization of 1803 .
The "place Durach" was first mentioned in 1170. Around 1300 a lower court was built, the village linden probably dates from this time. Friedrich III. renewed this lower jurisdiction by an imperial decree in 1455. In 1525 Georg Truchsess von Waldburg had 18 peasant leaders executed on a hill in Durach, thus ending the Upper Swabian Peasants' War .
In 1527 Durach became an independent parish for the first time . The plague raged during the Thirty Years' War between 1628 and 1635 in Durach as well, and the number of inhabitants fell to around 100 to 300 people. In the Kingdom of Bavaria , Durach became an independent municipality as a result of the municipal edict of 1818 .
In 1895 the Kempten – Pfronten ( Ausserfernbahn ) railway was built with a station in Durach. This railway line led to neighboring Tyrol .
Between 1943 and 1945, the Kottern-Weidach subcamp , a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp, was located in the Weidach district of the municipality .
During the territorial reform in 1972 , Durach remained an independent municipality, although Kempten made efforts to incorporate Durach in the 1930s and 1940s.
Between 1988 and 2018, the municipality grew from 5448 to 7202 by 1754 inhabitants or by 32.2%.

Architectural monuments
leisure
landscape
The landscape with the climatic stimuli of the altitude between 660 and 936 meters and many natural beauties offers a diverse field of activity for leisure activities. Hikes in the Bachteltobel of the Durach z. B. to Neuchâtel Castle and in the vastness of the Kempter Forest are possible.
Sulzberger See
Two kilometers to the south is the point in the territory of the market Sulzberg the Sulzberger Lake (Öschlesee). In addition to a lido there you will also find free bathing facilities and sunbathing areas for relaxation. The Sulzberger See is, like many other lakes in the Oberallgäu, a dead lake , which slowly melted from a large piece of glacier ice that had been left behind after the rapid fall of the ice in the outgoing glacial, while the meltwaters of the Iller glacier framed it all around with gravel.
Airfield
The highest airfield in Germany, the Kempten-Durach airfield , offers good opportunities to get a bird's eye view of the high mountains and foothills from a 710 meter long grass runway.
Scenes from the film Quax, the break pilot with Heinz Rühmann in the title role were filmed on the airfield .
economy
The rather leisurely tourism industry has recently been joined by the solar boom. Solarstocc AG, which belongs to the Centrosolar Group, has its headquarters here.
Due to the good transport links of the community to the federal autobahn 7 die, federal autobahn 980 and federal highway 12 and the proximity to Kempten and the Allgäu Alps, many companies have settled here. Logistics companies like Noerpel or Lebert have branches here. In addition to numerous small, medium-sized handicraft businesses, Oberall Bau GmbH has its headquarters here, the Sinz country bakery, with over 10 branches throughout the Upper and Eastern Allgäu , also comes from Durach and belongs to the Feneberg grocery chain from Kempten.
Manufacturing is also located in Durach. The PPS Pfennig Reinigungstechnik GmbH develops, produces and distributes cleaning systems for cleaning in hospitals, industrial or public buildings. Solidarity agriculture has also been practiced since 2016 .
