St. Knudsborg (also: St. Knud's Borg and Knutenburg ) is a rifle guild house with a restaurant in Flensburg, which was built in the 19th century. The cultural monument at Munktetoft 33 is now on the edge of the Flensburg campus.

Establishment and designation

"Borg" is the Low German and Danish word for castle. A medieval forerunner castle of this name in the same area is not documented and is only based on speculation. The mighty, medieval Flensburg Knudsgilde had its seat in the Knudsgildenhof, the Hof Holm 45, which today is mostly just called Holmhof.

The old names of the streets around Knudsborg bear witness to the original conditions in the area that was undeveloped in the Middle Ages. The name of the street Munketoft means "Mönchsfeld" after the Franciscan monastery that owned it. The Johannisallee leads to the Church of St. Johannis , to whose district the area belonged. The Hillig-Water-Gang , which also runs past the Knudsborg, was named after the legendary, “ holywater source that lies near the St. Knudsborg. The Hillig Water source was mentioned for the first time in 1789 in a poem with the following wording: “The holy miracle spring splashes there by the mill pond, which sharpens the wit, strengthens the mind and brightens the eyes. It banishes gout and poetic cramps, and saves bloodline, and is - everyone swears by it - veritable water! But you'd better have a drink! "

It was not until 1840 that the recently newly founded Knudsgilde set up a new shooting range in the aforementioned area on the slope above the mill pond. In 1844 the new rifle's guild's rifle house, to which they named St. Knudsborg, was completed. Since the 19th century, castle building elements were given to restaurant buildings in order to enhance them. The guest should feel like " king ". Knudsborg was initially given the address Waitzstraße 77, and later the address Munketoft 33.

Architecture and equipment

The two-story brick building has a half-hip roof. The verge of the gable is adorned with a circumferential framing, profiled cornice . On the west side of the main street, a sandstone plaque hangs below the gable. On the board there is the monogram of King Christian VIII and the Flensburg coat of arms , including the name of the building with the date of construction. In the festival hall of the Kundsgilde, located upstairs in the old building, there are old chairs with the names of the original chair owners engraved on them. More recently, the Knudsborg has been supplemented by modern extensions, including a glass winter garden, which can be used as a club room for larger events. Today St. Knudsborg has a shooting range with a 50-meter lane. A bowling facility was also set up in the building.

There is a spring pond in the garden in front of the Knudsborg. In January 1989 the Hillig-Water-Quelle fountain was restored by the Flensburg Beautification Association. There is a filter system in Knudsborg so that the spring water is of drinking water quality.

Meeting place of the Knudsgilde

The Knudsgildenbrüder still meet regularly in St. Knudsborg, which is still in their possession. The guild brothers meet once a week to shoot, play cards, eat together and discuss current news and history. On "Knudstag", June 25th of each year, the Knudsgilde not only completes its traditional march to the Flensburg town hall , it also celebrates in the Knudsborg. In May 2012, for example, the guild met there to appoint Prince Joachim of Denmark as an honorary brother.

Restaurant use

The restaurant is a tenant of the guild, which secures the maintenance of the building with the rental income. The guest room is also available to other guests. The restaurant also offers space for large gatherings of all kinds, for example for union members' meetings. In addition to eating meals, guests can also use the existing bowling alley at St. Knudsborg for a fee.
