The Expositurkirche St. Laurentius is the Roman Catholic church in the village of Stein, a district of the Plößberg market in the northern Upper Palatinate in the diocese of Regensburg . It was built from 1762 to 1763 by the Waldsassen monastery builder Philipp Muttone and is a listed building.

history

Abbot Wigand Deltsch laid the foundation stone for the church on June 8, 1762. The monastery builder Philipp Muttone , who had already designed several churches in the region, was appointed architect and planner . The consecration of the church was celebrated on August 9th, 1763 by the Beidler pastor Schilling.

Building description

The hall building has a retracted choir that is closed in a semicircle. The church tower is located on the northern side of the choir corner and has a typical regional onion dome as a tower top. The west facade has corner pilasters on high granite plinths. The two-bay choir adjoins the nave with its barrel vault and three bays.

Interior

The high altar probably dates from 1767. The altarpiece shows the martyrdom of the church patron, Saint Lawrence of Rome , next to it are two statues of Saints Sebastian and Florian . Two other statues, the Maria Immaculata on the crescent moon and Saint Joseph with the baby Jesus, stand on the outer sides. They originally stood on the side altars. They were probably created in their current form in 1857, the painting was created by a painter from Amberg in 1868/69 . The left side altar shows a picture of the Queen of Heaven, above is a painting of Saint Theresa of Avila and at the feet of the columns there are figures of Saint Elizabeth and Saint Francis . The right side altar contains a picture of Joseph and one of the Holy Abbot Leonhard above. At the feet of the other two columns are figures of a nun and the monk Augustine.

The ceiling paintings with stucco frames were not created until 1909 by the church painter Kaspar Schleibner . The pictures show scenes from the life of St. Lawrence. The ordination as a deacon , the education of the emperor about the treasures of the church (needy people), the capture and the farewell to his priest are shown. A fresco of the disciples and Jesus in Emmaus adorns the ceiling in the choir room. The choir arch contains three images of the transfiguration of Christ and scenes from the life of Jesus are depicted in the stitch caps above the windows.

The pulpit with pictures of the four evangelists was installed at the same time as the high altar in the church. The baptismal font is in the niche to the left of the pulpit.

The gallery was built later. Small reliquaries, portraits of Mary with the baby Jesus and Anna with her daughter Maria are attached to the lower parapet. On the walls four large paintings show the Annunciation , Jesus on the Mount of Olives, the flagellation of Jesus and the crowning of thorns. On the first floor of the gallery there is a statue of the Good Shepherd in a niche on the wall , in front of it a statue of Brother Conrad , opposite a glass shrine with St. Lawrence.
