St. Mary of the Assumption

The Catholic parish church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a listed church building in Alstätte , a district of the municipality of Ahaus in the Borken district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). Church and congregation belong to the deanery Ahaus in the diocese of Münster .

History and architecture

The parish was first mentioned in a document in 1297.

The west tower dates from the second half of the 15th century. The stepped gable was renewed. The church building is a four-bay wall pillar hall made of brick with a two-bay, drawn-in and flat-closed choir . It was built from 1789 to 1792, probably based on plans by Johann Engelbert Boner (1735–1815). The Alstätter Church is an early example of classicism in church construction in the diocese of Münster .

In 1936/1937 the building was extended to the north. After severe damage in the Second World War , the building was rebuilt in different ways. The building was extensively renovated in 2004.
