St. Maria Immaculata is a Roman Catholic parish church in Oberelspe , a district of Lennestadt in the Olpe district , North Rhine-Westphalia . Church and congregation are part of the Oene-Elspe-Tal pastoral network in the South Sauerland Dean's Office of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

The earliest news about an existing chapel dates back to around 1596 and lists the work that residents have to do to maintain the chapel. During the Thirty Years' War it was desecrated by hordes of soldiers.

In 1647 consecrated the Paderborn Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Bernhard Frick in honor of St. Quirinus a new altar; included were the relics of the Theban Martyrs and St. Barbara . In 1887 the Quirinus Chapel was expanded considerably due to the increased number of people, after a periodic service was held in the chapel from around 1860 by the parish of Elspe.

In 1894, an independent branch parish was founded in Oberelspe, consisting of Oberelspe, Altenvalbert , Burbecke and Habbecke . Vicar Josef Sauerwald enforced the church separation from Elspe in 1913; Since then Oberelspe has been parish vicarie . Hope for a new place of worship grew in 1912 when the farmer Innozenz Verse donated suitable land. Thanks to the tireless commitment and willingness of the population to make sacrifices, the construction of the church could begin in 1920. The inauguration of the new church of St. Maria Immaculata took place in December 1922.

The interior of the church was redesigned in 1970. In the 1990s, the interior and exterior were renovated and the organ was expanded . In 2001 a new parsonage was built next to the church. The parish of St. Maria Immaculata in Oberelspe (along with the parishes in Oedingen and Elspe ) belongs to the Elspe-Oenetal pastoral association , which was founded in September 2005 .

For Pentecost 2012, the old Oberelsper “Klepp bell” was put back into operation alongside the existing larger bells. The so-called "Klepp bell", which was rung before and during the services, probably dates from the time before the renovation of the aforementioned Quirinus Chapel in 1887. According to the records of the parish vicar Tölle, the Klepp bell was withdrawn for war purposes on May 26, 1942, but was not melted down due to fortunate circumstances. On October 7, 1947, the parish was able to receive the bell again. Now, 70 years after her “move to war”, she is ringing again at her previous location.
