The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Maria Rosenkranz in the Eicken district belongs to the St. Vitus parish in Mönchengladbach .

history

The neo-Gothic church building from 1875 became necessary because the rapid development of the textile industry from the middle of the 19th century led to an enormous population growth in the Eicken district. The architect Heinrich Nagelschmidt (1822–1902) from the Cologne Cathedral School was commissioned to build a neo-Gothic, three-aisled and cross-shaped church. After the foundation stone was laid in 1873, the building was completed on December 8, 1875, but the first Holy Mass was not celebrated in the church until December 10, 1876 due to the effects of the Kulturkampf . A first small bell in the roof turret is proven as early as 1876; five bells were commissioned in 1895 from the bell foundry Bour & A. Guenser, Metz , which were consecrated on August 8, 1896. In high mass on September 12, 1887, the Archbishop of Cologne , Philipp Krementz, placed the church under the patronage of the Queen of the Holy Rosary . From 1894 to 1896 the architect Josef Kleesattel was commissioned with the extension and the tower construction of the parish church.

Furnishing

The miraculous image in the altar of the Lady Chapel, a Byzantine icon , was consecrated on May 1st, 1887 and shows the growing child Jesus on the arm of Mary. It is a copy of the icon of Mary of Perpetual Help that can be seen today in St. Alfonso in Rome. The altar of the Lady Chapel was created by the sculptor Francois Perey (Kempen).

In the 1880s the interior of the church was decorated with painting, the high altar and two side altars (all by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg , Utrecht). The left side altar depicts the joyous, the right the glorious rosary . The high altar depicts the painful rosary. It was consecrated on September 12, 1887 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Philippus Kremenzt, the consecration of the two side altars did not take place until 1892.

The wooden crescent Madonna is of unknown origin. The blacksmith Max Heinrich Rolshoven (Cologne) created a silver crown for the Madonna; the sculpture was damaged several times, so in 1979 the baby Jesus with his silver crown was stolen. The abundant stained glass are fascinating and well worth seeing.

organ

The organ was built in 1969 by the organ building company Romanus Seifert (Kevelaer). The Schleifwindladen instrument has 37 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The music and stop actions are electric.
