Heinrich Nagelschmidt

Heinrich Nagelschmidt (born October 27, 1822 in Cologne ; † May 29, 1902 ) was a German architect and church builder who worked as such primarily in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Life

Heinrich Nagelschmidt is said to have studied in Berlin, Vienna and Munich, according to unconfirmed private writings. All that is certain is his stay in Berlin, where he also passed the examination to become a "building diligent" (1849) and private master builder (1852). Nagelschmidt returned to Cologne and worked there for Vinzenz Statz 's studio , taking on a number of projects as construction manager for it.

Nagelschmidt became known in Cologne and in 1853 was a member of the board of the Association for Christian Art , founded by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese Johann Anton Friedrich Baudri , which also dealt with ecclesiastical architecture and exerted influence. From the mid-1850s, Nagelschmidt went into business for himself and took on orders for various objects, including measures to restore the St. Kunibert and St. Andreas churches in Cologne. In 1868, Nagelschmidt's design for an organ loft for St. Kunibert led to a falling out with Vinzenz Statz, although the reasons for this were certainly not due to a stylistic form that Statz did not appreciate, since both architects were representatives of neo-Gothic and often implemented this architectural style in the Rhineland.

Heinrich Nagelschmidt, who was also politically active, was elected by the National Liberal Party, founded in 1867, as its representative in the city council. Until his death he was a member of the Cologne citizens' council as a representative of the second class of voters. In several elections to the city council, he was even nominated as a candidate by the opposing center party.

Heinrich Nagelschmidt was a member of the pioneers of the 2nd Rhenish Landwehr Regiment No. 28 in Cologne. Although he retired from active service in 1863/64, he took part in the Franco-German War as Prime Lieutenant of the Pioneers , where he was awarded the Iron Cross.
