history

A chapel in Sievernich is mentioned for the first time in 1208. In 1854 Sievernich became an independent parish, before the church was a branch of the parish of St. Mary's Assumption in Disternich . The old chapel was demolished in 1869. The construction of today's church began that same year. The church was planned by the Cologne architect Vincenz Statz in neo-Gothic style , but the construction of the church was supervised by the architects Heinrich Nagelschmidt and August Carl Lange . On July 7, 1873, the new church was finally consecrated by Archbishop Paulus Melchers . The church was badly damaged during World War II. After the war, the church was rebuilt under the direction of the architect Wilhelm Ernst.

Since 2010 St. Johann Baptist in Sievernich is no longer an independent parish. It was established with the former parishes of St. Gereon (Vettweiß), St. Michael (Kelz), St. Antonius (Ginnick), St. Gangolf (Soller), St. Jakobus the Elder (Jakobwüllesheim), St. Mariä Himmelfahrt (Disternich) , St. Amandus (Müddersheim), St. Martin (Froitzheim) and St. Petrus (Gladbach) merged to form the parish of St. Marien, Vettweiß.

Furnishing

The gothic carved altar deserves a special mention. This comes from the Church of St. Matthew in Pattern . However, since the church was demolished in the 1980s due to the advancing opencast mine Zukunft-West, the high altar came to Sievernich, where it was restored by the sculptor Karl Heinz Müller from Brühl. There is also a neo-Gothic pulpit in the church . Most of the windows date from 1955. These were created by an unknown artist. A window from the 19th century is also preserved.
