St. Marien is a Catholic church in Bremen . It is named after St. Mary (mother of Jesus) and is located on Fresenbergstrasse in the Blumenthal district . The St. Marien Church is the oldest church in the Dean's Office Bremen-Nord; their parish of the same name, to which almost 5,000 Catholics belong (as of 2014), belongs to the diocese of Hildesheim .

history

In 1854, the priest Wilhelm Nürnberg began to build up a Catholic community in the then still independent community of Blumenthal, as the number of Catholics on the Lower Weser increased in the 19th century due to industrialization and the associated influx of workers, especially from Eichsfeld and from Poland , had increased sharply. Catholic church books have been kept in Blumenthal since 1854 . Construction of the church began in 1858, this first phase of construction was inaugurated on October 2, 1859 by Bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin and today serves as a choir . On November 2, 1859, the previous mission was converted into a parish. The central nave of the church was built in 1892 , as the number of parishioners had increased further after the Bremen wool combing factory was founded in 1883 . In 1913 the aisles were built.

On November 1, 2006, the parish of St. Marien was also joined by the churches of Hl. Kreuz in Blumenthal (with a branch church of St. Ansgar in Schwanewede ) and Christ König in Rönnebeck , whose parishes were abolished in this context. The Holy Cross Church was profaned on November 28, 2014 .

Architecture and equipment

The church was built as a neo-Gothic brick building and is around 15 meters above sea level . Its tower, in which there are three bells , has a cross and weather vane with a height of 42 meters.
