St. Marien in Sonnefeld

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Marien in the Upper Franconian community of Sonnefeld in the Coburg district was consecrated in 1957 and listed as a historical monument in 2018 . It is a branch church of the parish Ebersdorf .

history

In 1933 two Catholic families lived in Sonnefeld. On April 22nd, 1933, the first Holy Mass since the introduction of the Reformation took place in the house of the Huber family with nine participants . Services stopped in 1939 as a result of police harassment. After the Second World War , around 200 people celebrated Holy Mass again on September 1, 1946 in the refectory of the former monastery . With the refugees and displaced persons who came to Sonnefeld, the number of Catholics had risen to about 600 people, which at that time corresponded to about a quarter of the population. As a result, the desire for their own church grew and a church building association was founded. The Ebersdorf pastor Stelzer was able to initiate the purchase of a building site on the southern outskirts of Sonnefeld in the direction of Weidhausen. This also made it possible to involve the Catholics from neighboring Weidhausen . The Coburg architect Josef Rauschen created the design . The foundation stone for the church was laid on July 1, 1956 by the Bamberg prelate Heinrich Rauh. On October 6, 1957, Archbishop Josef Schneider consecrated the church in honor of Mary and Saint Hedwig . In the years 1993 to 1995 the church was completely renovated. Among other things, because of the stained glass windows in the choir and because of the simple post-war building material, the church building was placed under monument protection in 2018.

description

The church is a north-facing single-nave gable roof building . Arranged on the west side is the gable-roof-roofed church tower in which four bronze bells hang. The church entrance has a protruding canopy, designed as a half cone. Above it is a colorful triangular window in the ridge gable and behind it the organ gallery . In the vestibule there is a carved wood picture of Saint Anthony of Padua from the Zwick art workshop in Oberammergau .

The north gable wall behind the altar shows motifs from the rosary on five surfaces divided into glass. The stained glass windows were designed by Adelbert Bringmann at the Coburg art glass factory Bringmann und Schmidt. The Madonna of the Marian altar in the aisle was carved by the Sonnefeld artist Norbert Köhn. In the 1990s, new windows were created in the nave, works by the Bamberg artist Angelika Turban. The organ, which was installed in 1973 and renovated in 2008, has 14 registers and 1016 pipes.
