history

The altar of St. Mary's Church

A chapel in what was then Woldershusen was first mentioned in a document in 1387. The von Woldershusen family of knights gave the Pöhlde monastery the right of patronage over the Wollershausen chapel, which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1398 the lords of Minnigerode (noble family) took over the patronage right (until 1934). In the course of the Reformation between 1533 and 1543 , the Protestant faith was introduced in Wollershausen, which, in contrast to the Eichsfeld communities south of the Rhume, belonged to the Principality of Grubenhagen .

In 1610/11 the choir room was built under Johann von Minnigerode and a hereditary burial below was set up. In addition, the wooden coffered ceiling was created with its precious paintings, which is a rare work of art in its kind.

The Thirty Years' War prevented the continuation of the renovation, which could not be continued until 1675 by his son Hans von Minnigerode and later by his grandson Georg Friedrich von Minnigerode: the central nave and tower with outer walls made of field stone were created.

The vault under the tower was now designated as the new burial place for the family and served as such until 1802. In the meantime, the bones have been transferred to the cemetery.

Furnishing

The wooden pulpit from 1619

The altar trim, in its oldest parts still preserved in Gothic style, shows the adoration of the baby Jesus by the three wise men from the Orient. The inscription names Dorothea von Minnigerode as the donor of this article from 1614.

The painted wooden pulpit in the Renaissance style comes from Hans Zimmermann von Lichtenfels (Franconia) from the year 1619. As the pulpit bearer, Moses refers to the third commandment : “You should sanctify the holiday”. The polygonal pulpit represents Jesus Christ , the ruler of the world, who is framed by the four evangelists.

Dorothea von Minnigerode had the grave monument on the left side of the choir room (epitaph) made for her husband Johann von Minnigerode, who died in 1611, from black Italian marble and white alabaster.

On the right side of the choir is the coat of arms of Georg Friedrich von Minnigerode, under which the church was completed.

The baroque baptismal angel from 1730 floating in the chancel should also be emphasized .

The altarpiece, the pulpit and the baptismal angel were restored in 2001.
