history

Originally the Godesbergers visited the old Rüngsdorf church for worship. At the beginning of the 19th century, the chapel of the secularized Marienforst monastery and then the Michaelskapelle at Godesburg, built around 1660, served as the parish church of the newly founded Catholic parish of Godesberg. As the access to the chapel on the mountain was difficult and it became too small, the foundation stone for a Godesberg church was laid in October 1860. The church, planned by master builder Vinzenz Statz , was completed in 1862 and consecrated in 1863; a simple, three - aisled, neo - Gothic hall church with a front tower, almost 60 meters high. In 1894 there was an expansion to a cruise ship (construction of a centralizing transept in the eastern part, consecration in 1896) under the Statz son Franz . In the 1960s, the interior of the church was redesigned as part of the renewal of the liturgy ( Second Vatican Council ).

In addition to the Gothic Pietà, the north and south windows of the transept with depictions from the life of St. Elisabeth and St. Hermann Joseph , the choir window with the Old Testament depictions of the sacrifice of Isaac and the Passover meal as well as the altar from the 1960s, its design to remind of the crown of thorns . The modern tabernacle by Olaf Höhnen points to the origins of the Lord's Supper . The bronze entrance door, which is also modern, shows seven scenes from the lives of Mary and Jesus in the form of a tree surrounded by a snake .
