history

A document dated July 1, 1340 suggests that a church or chapel must have already existed in Heinrichsgrün at this time. The location was near the former school house. Around 1538 the little wooden church, which was already under the patronage of St. Martin at that time, was given the character of a parish church. Originally all of the villages belonging to Heinrichsgrün were parish. In the course of the Counter-Reformation in Bohemia, the parish was given a Catholic priest as early as 1627. However, the residents adhered to the Lutheran faith until 1641.

After the old building had been demolished, construction of the current church began in 1658 under the patronage of Count Hans Hartwig von Nostitz-Rieneck . The consecration took place in 1661. In 1740 a new entrance hall was built at the southern side entrance. In 1790 part of the northern walls collapsed. Since then the north nave was supported by the pier walls. At that time, the interior ceiling was also redesigned and the entire building was renovated both inside and out. In 1797 a new main altar and in 1801 a new pulpit could be acquired with voluntary donations.

On the evening of June 13, 1802, lightning struck the church tower. After the fire, only the outer walls, vaults and part of the sacristy were preserved. All three altars, the pulpit and part of the organ of the interior were destroyed. The reconstruction of the church at the expense of Count Friedrich von Nostitz-Rieneck amounted to 14991 florins and took five months, during which the original shape was essentially restored. The new roof was now covered with double shingles and the dome tower received a tinplate with a lightning rod. The ceremonial reopening took place on Martin's Day.

Another major renovation of the church took place in 1895, when two new pictures for the side altars, donated by Emilie Rölz and the Baumann family from Heinrichsgrün, were purchased. In addition, the church received new glass windows from a company in Innsbruck . Count Erwein von Nostitz-Rieneck , the industrialist Adolf Lössl from Vienna and a citizen of Heinrichsgrün were largely responsible for the costs .

In 2003, with the help of a grant of 500,000 crowns from the German-Czech Future Fund (DTZF), repair work was carried out on the roof. A comprehensive renovation of the external facade took place in 2011.

architecture

The church has a single nave nave with a six-sided presbytery and a steeple with an eight-sided prismatic structure.

Furnishing

inside view

The interior is largely in the Empire style . The main altar with the image of St. Martin was created by the painter Franz Anton Glassl from Falkenau . This was replaced in 1804 by a new altar by the sculptor Johann Wildt from Elbogen and the painter Josef Sättler. The current reredos from 1851 was made in Prague. Opposite is a baroque painting from 1607 showing the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt .

The pictures on the side altars were newly acquired by the Christian Academy in Prague in 1895. The statues of St. John of Nepomuk and a statue of Christ date from the 19th century. Franz Krombach painted the Stations of the Cross from 1890 . The baroque sculptures at the southern entrance were originally in Heinrichsgrün Castle.

Bells

Originally there were two bells in the church tower . The larger one with the representation of St. Martin bore the inscription: Christoph di Valle fudit me Egrae 1803 . The smaller bell with the representation of St. Joseph and St. Barbara had the inscription: Christoph di Valle fudit me Egrae 1821 and below: God protect the city and country from wars, hail, plague and fire . Both bells were melted down during the First World War. In the interwar period, two new bells were purchased, which were also lost in the course of the Second World War. Today there is an iron bell from 1917 in the church tower.

Burials

In the church by the altar are buried:

in the churchyard (on the site of the old church):

  • 1589 Count Abundus Schlick and his wife Agnes b. Countess of Lippa
  • 1598 Katharina von Globen , b. Multz from Waldau
