Life

The parents were Georg and Creszenz Krombach. Little is known about the painter's professional training. In 1870 he was drafted into the military. In 1872 he was sentenced to a prison term of 1 ½ years for the crime of violating subordination (refusing to obey orders or being obliged to obey orders) . He was in prison until March 7, 1874. In 1878 Franz Krombach married Maria Margareta Hofrichter, the bricklayer's daughter from Amberg . In 1890 he was granted civil rights by the city of Munich. Between 1874 and 1883, i.e. within nine years, he changed his place of residence eleven times within Munich. Between 1882 and 1901 Franz Krombach stayed abroad again and again to paint jobs.

Most of the previously known works by Franz Krombach are versions of the 14 Stations of the Cross . Krombach used the Stations of the Cross cycle by the Austrian painter Johann Evangelist Klein (1823–1883) as a model for depicting many of his Stations of the Cross . Paintings by old masters such as Matthias Grünewald , Albrecht Dürer , Anthonis van Dyck or Peter Paul Rubens also served as models for his depictions of the crucifixion or burial in the cycles of the Cross and the altarpieces.

Today, works by Franz Krombach are mainly known from southern Germany and Alsace, but also from Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and Croatia. His last work is likely to have been the Stations of the Cross from 1908 in the pilgrimage church of Maria vom Sieg Greßhausen.
