Parish Church of St. Martin in Westheim (Rosengarten community)

history

The church is located on the so-called Berghof , which was originally a Franconian royal court. In 788 the Lorsch Monastery acquired this farm, from which it came into the possession of the Murrhardt Monastery in 1054 . Today's sacred building was built between 1846 and 1849 according to plans by Hall's district building inspector Immanuel Pflüger . The floor plan of the previous building, a Romanesque choir tower church , was cited. Like that, today's church is named after St. Martin . To the south is the churchyard chapel , which was built around 1400 .

The sacred building was the central church for the workers of the rock salt mine Wilhelmsglück . A communal grave in the cemetery commemorates 26 miners who were killed in an explosion in this mine in 1879.

Description and equipment

The church is a construction of the round arch style , whereby the exterior imitates elaborately Romanesque structures. The walls of the interior are plastered white. The high nave is sparse and without ornament, the seating is made of wood. The historical furnishings include the sacrament house from around 1400 , the baptismal font from the 15th century and the epitaph of Rudolph Christoph Senft von Suhlburg (died 1577). A lockable vestibule for 50 people in the area of the main entrance served as a winter church . The use of this winter church was reduced due to the construction of the Protestant parish hall in 2009.
