Life

Franz Felbinger was the son of Karl Felbinger, who was raised to hereditary knighthood in  accordance with the statutes of the Order of the Iron Crown in 1870 as Vice Director of the kk Central-Direction of the tobacco factories and redemption offices ( Vienna-Innere Stadt , Seilerstätte 7) .

Felbinger studied at the Vienna Polytechnic (today: Vienna University of Technology ) and became an engineer . After completing his studies, he volunteered on major construction tours and in a machine factory. He then worked for several years as a designer in the United States . After his return in 1872 he took over the design and construction of the funicular railway leading over the northern flank of the Leopoldsberg towards Kahlenberg from 1873 . In 1873 he published a project for the pneumatic transport of corpses to the Vienna Central Cemetery , which was not implemented for reasons of piety. From 1874 he built a pneumatic tube system in Vienna that went into operation in 1875 , the mechanical device of which was his own invention. He received an appointment from Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan to Berlin, where the pneumatic post network was opened in Berlin in December 1876 . He was also entrusted with the construction of pneumatic tube systems in Munich and Hamburg , as well as the execution of so-called house tube posts in other cities.

After his marriage to the daughter of the city architect Werner in Brno , he settled in Moravia . In Brno he was the first to use electric light. In Schöllschitz ( Želešice ) in the Obrawa (Bobrava) valley, in 1876 he set up a model estate with a chicken and pig breeding facility, trout and crab breeding facilities and other innovations. Its wall gardens with vineyards and tropical fruits were well known, its fruit preservation rooms and cellars were consistently described by experts as exemplary and the products were awarded prizes at various exhibitions.

He later studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Fritz von Uhde and in Brno with Emil Pirchan . He mainly created history paintings and portraits and appeared in public in the early 1880s, especially in Brno. As he was the first to represent the modern direction of plein-air painting, his works initially aroused fierce opposition, but his success gradually increased after his artistry was undisputedly recognized in German exhibitions. Works were hung in the Gomperz Gallery in Brno and in the Franzensmuseum, also located there, there was a self-portrait that looked like a lifelike mirror image. His most outstanding works are “Die Armut” and “Ein Verlorener”. Felbinger was also a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative .

In 1897 he set up a dried vegetable factory and received the gold medal of the Brno Trade Association and the title of purveyor to the court. He also introduced the cultivation of vegetables in the fields.
