St. Marcellinus and Peter
The Church of St. Marzellinus und Petrus is a Roman Catholic church building in Vallendar .
history
Already in 836, at the same time as St. Castor on the other side of the Rhine, the first church was completed in Vallendar and consecrated by the Trier bishop Hetti to the patronage of the Roman catacomb martyrs and canon saints Marcellinus and Peter . Little is known about this building. It was replaced by a new building in the 13th century. The church was the center of the largest Trier parish on the right of the Rhine. The original double tower facade was replaced by today's west tower in 1501. At the end of the 18th century the church became too small and dilapidated; except for the tower it was demolished and today's church was built according to plans by the royal building inspector Johann Claudius von Lassaulx . The new church was on September 19, 1841 consecrated . Today it is the parish church of the same parish and together with St. Peter and Paul in Urbar and St. Georg in Niederwerth the parish community Vallendar in the diocese of Trier .
The church is 76 m long and thus the second largest church in the diocese of Trier after the Trier Cathedral .
organ
In 1786 the church in Vallendar received an organ that was built in 1758 by the organ builder Stumm for the castle chapel in Ehrenbreitstein. In 1842 this instrument was expanded from 20 to 27 registers . In 1955 and 1971 it was rebuilt and enlarged by the organ building company Kemper und Sohn; the historical substance was largely lost.
Today's organ was built in 1998 by the organ building company Gebr. Oberlinger (Windesheim) with 49 registers. In 2009, previously vacant registers were added by the organ builders Raab and Plenz (Hackenheim). Today the instrument has 52 stops on three manual works and a pedal with a total of 3499 pipes.
