The Catholic parish church of St. Meinolf is a listed church building in Bellersen , a district of the town of Brakel in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The church and parish belong to the Höxter deanery in the Archdiocese of Paderborn . The church stands in the middle of a walled cemetery. The Corvey monastery had a main courtyard in the village in the 12th century, the parish church was the center of the parish according to a parish division from 1231.

History and architecture

The church was first mentioned in 1015 in the vita of Bishop Meinwerk .

The four-axis building is a simple hall building that closes on three sides in the east. The church was built from 1746 to 1749. The west tower was added in 1746. The hexagonal chapel of the Barons von Haxthausen was added in 1932. The tomb of Baron Elmerhaus III is on the outside of the north-eastern church wall. from Haxthausen.

A cove ceiling can be seen in the interior, the sacristy door in the apex of the choir is marked 1603, it has a frame with fittings . August Oetken painted the interior in New Baroque style in 1932.

Furnishing

  • In the tower an altar piece with Vespers from 1610, inscribed: Heinrich Gröninger . The altar is made of sand-lime brick.
  • Two figurative epitaphs from 1583 and 1589 are in the chapel.
  • The sandstone baptismal font is from the beginning of the 17th century.
  • The wooden pulpit is a work from the mid-18th century.
  • The Madonna was carved by Anton Joseph Stratmann around 1780, it was recast in 1973 based on findings.
  • The wooden figures of Saints Meinolf and Liborius come from the former high altar, they were carved in the third quarter of the 18th century.

organ

The instrument was probably built in 1872 by Fleiter from Münster. Siegfried Sauer from Ottbergen restored it in 1971. The case is new, three partly old and seven whole registers have been reused.

Trivia

The beggar Hermann Georg Winkelhan was buried on September 18, 1806 in the church cemetery. Annette von Droste-Hülshoff wrote the novella Die Judenbuche based on his life story .
