St. Nicolai is the main Evangelical Lutheran church in the city of Alfeld , Lower Saxony . It is a Gothic hall church with a two-tower west building that is visible far over the Leine valley . It is named after Nikolaus von Myra , who was the patron saint of boatmen and merchants in the Middle Ages.

Building history

The current building is the result of various extensions and renovations. The original church was a Romanesque building from the end of the 11th century. At that time, the Fredener Archidiaconate was relocated here, which gave Alfeld's urban development an important impetus. The church was a cruciform basilica , of which the main substance of the westwork and the former crossing pillars have been preserved. Around 1400 the nave was converted into a Gothic hall, and towards the end of the same century the Romanesque choir was replaced by three more hall bays .

In 1542 the council and citizens of Alfeld accepted the Lutheran confession. St. Nicolai became the seat of a superintendent , and in 1569 a general superintendent .

The organ was built from 1862 to 1863 by the organ builder Heinrich Schaper (Hildesheim) with 31 stops on three manuals and a pedal. In 1917 the prospect pipes had to be delivered for war purposes; they were later replaced by zinc pipes. After the Second World War, the instrument was revised and the disposition lightened according to the sound ideas of the time. 1957 to 1962 the organ was redesigned and profoundly changed by the organ construction company Friedrich Weißenborn (Braunschweig). The echo work was removed; for this purpose a Rückpositiv was inserted in the gallery parapet. The technology was largely rebuilt. The disposition has been expanded to 37 registers. In 1960 the organ builder Emil Hammer added two new registers. In 2015 the organ was restored by the organ builder Jörg Bente . Today the instrument has 44 registers (including a deduction) on three manuals and pedal.
