The Church of St. Nicholas

The listed Evangelical Church of St. Nikolaus is located in the district of Gleichamberg in the town of Römhild in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia and belongs to the Hildburghausen-Eisfeld parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

In the center of the village is the high-lying village church , unsecured as the second name St. Alban . Walls made of local basalt serve to fortify the slope on which the church and the cemetery are located . There are three terraces on it . The building gives the impression of a fortified church , but this cannot be proven historically.

The core of the choir tower church is a work from the 14th century, which was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century and in 1594 (according to the dates on the corner stones of the tower) and in the 17th century. Inside, there are circumferential double galleries from the 17th century, the upper one with a baluster parapet and the lower one shows scenes from the life of Christ painted in the parapet fields.

Furnishing

The furnishing is a rare example of an almost completely preserved interior with painting from the middle of the 18th century. In the former Gothic choir there is a gallery that supports the organ . Below is the altar with a reredos from 1741, which is flanked by figures of the apostles Peter and Paul. The pulpit carried by a figure of Moses, the baptismal font with the figure of Christ and a child as a support and the stalls, the door cheeks of which are provided with half-figures of angels, date from the same time. The organ is a work by Johann Georg Döring from 1741 with 12 stops on a manual and pedal . It was rearranged in 1817 by Ferdinand Döring. In 1917 the prospect pipes had to be handed in for war purposes and were replaced by zinc pipes in 1919. During a restoration in 1980/81, the organ was partially returned to its condition from 1870. The disposition is:
