The Basilica of Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral or Old St. Patrick’s for short is a pseudo-basilica located at 260–264 Mulberry Street between Prince and Houston Street in Manhattan in the City of New York . The church building was the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York until today's Saint Patrick's Cathedral was inaugurated in 1879.

history

Construction of Old Saint Patrick's began in 1809. The foundation stone was laid on June 8th of that year. The design for this church building comes from the architect Joseph-Francois Mangin, who also planned the City Hall of the city, and was completed in just under six years, so that the church building could be consecrated on May 14, 1815. The building measures 120 feet in length and 80 feet in width (about 37 m × 24 m), and the vault is within 85 feet (about 26 m) high. The structure was damaged by fire in 1866 and then repaired, although the new St. Patrick's Cathedral was already under construction. The reconstruction took place under the direction of the architect Henry Engelbert and was completed with the reopening in 1868. Since 1879, the church is a parish church , the priest lives in the original bishopric in 263 Mulberry Street. The parish also includes the Most Holy Crucifix Church, which mainly serves Catholics of Asian origin, as Old Saint Patrick's is now on the edge of Chinatown .

In the main church services are held in English and Spanish. The church was originally the focus of the St. Patrick's Day parade , but it was moved further north to pass the new cathedral. The Ancient Order of Hibernians had its headquarters across the street after anti-Irish troublemakers besieged the cathedral in 1835. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and on March 17, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI declared the church became a minor basilica .

Location in the film

The scene with the baptism in the film The Godfather was shot in the church, likewise the scene in The Godfather III , in which Michael Corleone is honored by a cardinal on behalf of the Vatican. A scene from the film Hexenkessel took place in the walled churchyard.
