History of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul

The first documentary mention of Bardenberg, at that time Bardunbach, can be found in the year 867. This document deals with the exchange of goods in the commarca Bardunbach between King Lothar II and a vassal of Jülich Count Matfried. The author W. Nellessen suspects that these are lands of the later Fronhof Steinhaus . There was probably already a typical wooden church for the time, together with a rectory. In the 10th century in Bardinbach or Bardumbach , this first wooden church was replaced by a Romanesque stone church, the tower of which rested on a round cross vault supported by four columns. On November 8, 1043, Archbishop Hermann II of Cologne awarded the income from the Bardenberg Church to the St. Severin Monastery in Cologne, which then formally provided the pastor and, from the 13th century, a vicar who was responsible for the service.

The oldest documents in the church archives date from the 16th century. Earlier documents were lost in a fire caused by the French (1542 or 1691).

At the beginning of the 17th century the pastor in Bardenberg was called a pastor. The right of the dean of St. Severin in Cologne to propose the respective pastor is no longer mentioned. On December 4, 1684, the tower of the Bardenberger Church was struck by lightning and went up in flames. At the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century, the previous church no longer seems to have met the requirements. In 1811 the planning of a new building, then in the years 1818-1824 according to the plans of the Aachener farming inspector began Johann Peter Cremer in neo-classical was built style. The new building was preceded by the demolition of the church from the 10th century in the years 1817/1818.

About 100 years later, in the years 1914–1920, the new building of today's late historicist , neo-Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul is carried out by the Aachen district architect Heinrich van Kann . The steeple was not completed until 1922. In 1926 the church was consecrated . Due to the effects of the war, the church was so badly damaged in 1944 that it was not possible to use it for a long time. For this reason, an emergency church was set up in the hall of the Hammers inn on Dorfstrasse. It took five years until the church could be used again on October 9th after the reconstruction with a festive service by the Aachen bishop Johannes Joseph van der Felden.

In 1964, St. Peter and Paul received five new bronze bells. The Barbara bell was the only cast steel bell that remained in the tower. The new bells were given to the parish patrons Peter and Paul, Mary and Joseph, St. Michael and Pope John XXIII. consecrated. In 1965 the tower helmet and substructure were redesigned. The total height including the ball and cock has been 68 meters since then. Three years later, the main entrance was redesigned by stonemason Hermann Derichs in Bardenberg and blacksmith Albert Sous in Würselen in Miltenberger sandstone including a copper sheet cover. The exterior of the church tower was renovated between 1989 and 1992.

As early as 1985, there was increasing damage to the Stahlhut organ installed in 1949. After ten years of collecting, the time had finally come in 1995: a new Wilbrand organ replaced the desolate Stahlhut organ. In 2001 and 2002 the interior of the day chapel and the church tower were renovated, and finally in 2003 and 2004 the interior of the church and the redesign of the choir room.

Since 2003 the parish has belonged to the community of parishes (GdG) Würselen , which consisted of St. Balbina, St. Marien, St. Pius X., St. Sebastian and St. Peter and Paul.

On January 1, 2010, the eight parishes of the current GdG Würselen and GdG Broichweiden merged to form the new Catholic parish of St. Sebastian.
