Existing records
World record | 11.04 s | Inge Helten ( Federal Republic of Germany ) | Fürth , Federal Republic of Germany | June 13, 1976 |
Olympic record | 11.07 s | Renate Stecher ( GDR ) | Final of Munich , Federal Republic of Germany | 2nd September 1972 |
Note:
Even hand-timed times were still part of the official best and record lists at that time, which had an impact on the short distances in particular and led to different records. The official lists consisted of a mixture in which hand-stopped and electronically taken times rounded to tenths were entered together. However, since the hand-timed times were about one to two tenths of a second better than the electronically determined values due to the delay in reaction of the timekeepers, there were soon separate lists. From 1977 on, only electronic times were officially kept.
To complete this, here is an overview of the records rounded to tenths of a second, including hand-timed times:
World record | 10.8 s | Renate Stecher ( GDR ) | Dresden , GDR (now Germany ) | 20th July 1973 |
Olympic record | 11.0 s | Wyomia Tyus ( USA ) | Mexico City Final , Mexico | 15th October 1968 |

Four Germans had qualified for the final, two sprinters from the GDR and two from the Federal Republic of Germany. The final field was completed by two Americans, one Australian and one from Great Britain.
Annegret Richter, who had been in Munich four years earlier under the name Annegret Irrgang Olympiafünfte, had set a new world record in the semifinals with 11.01 seconds in the purely electronically measured times and improved the old mark of her teammate Inge Helten by three hundredths of a second. Together with the 1972 Olympic champion , Renate Stecher from the GDR, Annegret Richter was the favorite for this race. The Australian Raelene Boyle, silver medalist from Munich, and Inge Helten were also rated highly. A close race was expected between these four medal contenders.
The favorites all got off to a good start and the gaps were extremely close. After 50 meters, Annegret Richter took the lead. She ran her race and brought the small lead she had developed to the finish. She won in 11.08 s. At the start of the evening, the conditions for the female sprinters were no longer as good as in the afternoon for the semi-finals, so that a further improvement in the world record was hardly possible. As expected, the fight for the other medals was also close. Renate Stecher won silver in 11.13 seconds ahead of Inge Helten, another four hundredths of a second behind. Six hundredths of a second behind Helten, Raelene Boyle crossed the finish line in fourth.
