The Roman Catholic Church of St. Petrus and Anna is a characteristic church building in Bad Laasphe in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the Wittgenstein Pastoral Association.

History and architecture

A pastor was first mentioned in Laasphe in 1219, a church building has been occupied since 1230. The Reformation began in 1534 on the instructions of the sovereigns Johann and Wilhelm. After that there was no more Catholic mass in the village for almost 300 years. Since 1931, the Catholic faithful of the diaspora community have been cared for from Bad Berleburg . During and after the Second World War , around 2,000 Catholic expellees from Upper Silesia settled in and around the village.

First church

With the help of the Bonifatiusverein, the Catholic diaspora community built a small church on a hillside above the village from 1950 to 1951 according to a design by the architect Aloys Dietrich. A small rectory was attached to the church. In the mountain side of the small hall church was the choir tower , the church on the hill side was with a gable roof covered. The brightly plastered walls were structured by small windows, the complex was characterized by high slate roofs. After just a few years, the building turned out to be too small for the now rapidly growing community, and severe structural damage occurred. The church and rectory were demolished in 1968.

Second church

The new building was built from 1968 to 1969 on the same property according to plans by the architect Aloys Sonntag and was consecrated on December 14, 1969 by Archbishop Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger . The church can accommodate about 300 visitors. The unusual design is based on the idea of arranging seven staggered monopitch roofs with little inclination in a regular sequence. The roofs are staggered both in height and in specific lengths. The middle roof towers above the rest and is also wider than any other roof. The chancel and the organ are located under the central roof . The three pent roofs adjoining on both sides each lose the same amount of height. This made it possible to install a total of six light strips that illuminate the interior. The outer walls are plastered white, the building is accessed via a staircase that leads up the slope at the side. In the 1980s, a rectangular bell tower was added on the valley side, according to designs by the architects' office Sonntag; it is covered with a counter-rotating pent roof. The interior is shaped by the roof architecture, its design is symmetrical. The spacious chancel is raised by three steps. The lay chairs are grouped in a slightly curved order around the altar area. The confessionals and prayer corners are housed under the two outer roofs. Under the rear of the central roof, slightly raised, is a podium and above it the organ gallery. The side porches are glazed. The wall surfaces are mostly white, they are interrupted by surfaces in red-brown color. The ceilings are paneled with wood. The glazing was made to designs by Ludwig Schaffrath .
