The Catholic parish church of St. Pius is a characteristic church building in Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The parish belongs to the diocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

In the 1950s, the population growth made it necessary to build a new church. The building stands on a hill in the middle of the new town and is visible far above the town. The designs were made by the architect Johannes Reuter from Frankfurt in 1955. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 23, 1956 and the church was consecrated on December 14, 1957. The patron saint is Pope Pius X , who was canonized in 1954 .

The elongated nave with a moderately steep gable roof stands parallel to the steep mountain slope. For these topographical reasons, the building is not oriented to the east as usual, but to the north. On the valley side, the community rooms are located in the basement.

The building stands on a stone plinth , the walls are plastered white. The covered roof areas shape the appearance. The walls are divided by arched windows that are arranged in groups of three or in pairs. The gable side is divided by three narrow arches, they accommodate the portals in the lower area . In the upper area they are faced with stone slabs in deep niches.

In the interior, the slightly vaulted, white ceiling is supported by slender, cross-shaped supports. The apse is glazed and so a luminous background for the altar. The black flooring consists of polished slate panels. The glazing consists of nine narrow strips, it was designed by Wilhelm Buschulte in 1957 and executed by Heinrich Oidtmann from Linnich. The glazing in the nave and in the crypt as well as the window of the baptistery come from Buschulte; the longhouse windows were carried out by the art workshop H. u. H. Töllner from Dortmund. The sanctuary is raised by four steps. The baptistery is at the back.

crypt

The crypt is located under the chancel, where services are celebrated on weekdays. It is accessible via an entrance on the valley side. The round window made up of nine fields is remarkable; it is structured by separating webs made of building concrete. Relics of Pope Pius X are kept in an ebony shrine in the altar table .

tower

The almost square tower with a flat tent hood stands next to the church building. Its vertical design is supported by the upwardly tapering views. Originally, a public staircase led through the tower as a footpath.

Peal

In the tower there is a ring of five bells with the names: Pius, Maria, Josef, Laurentius and Barbara. They were cast in 1960 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock and are tuned to the pitch d'-e'-f sharp'-a'-h '.

The Pius bell is inscribed: Pius pastor voca piam parochiam pium ad convivium pro mundi vita! Anno congressus eucharistici MCMLX . (Pius, shepherd, call a pious parish to the Holy Supper for the life of the world! In the year of the Eucharistic Congress 1960.)

Furnishing

Much of the furnishings were designed by the church's architect.

  • Originally the altar stood on a three-tier tribuna.
  • The tabernacle was first carried from the altar, it was moved to a stele in 1968 .
  • The lecture cross, like the tabernacle, was made in 1960 by Adolf Westerling from Düsseldorf.
  • The pulpit made of slate is located between the choir and the nave.
  • The door handles are stylized like a peacock, the attribute of Liborius .
  • The bronze way of the cross was cast in 1987 based on designs by Cäcilia Scheffer from Düsseldorf.
  • A figure of Mary made of wood was carved in simple forms by Adolf Westergerling in 1959, it stands on the left side of the ship.
  • The copper baptismal font was made in 1959 by Adolf Westergerling. It is adorned with simple depictions of Adam and Eve, the Mother of God with the baby Jesus and fish with waves. The lid is crowned by a dove
  • The relief from 1964 depicting the Holy Family hangs in the stairway to the organ gallery . It is a work by Max Hundt.

organ

The organ was built in 1962 by Anton Feith in Paderborn. The prospectus spans the entire south wall. The instrument consists of three separate works . The Rückpositiv with six registers stands on a sliding drawer in the gallery parapet. The main work is on the back wall of the church. The main mechanism and pedal mechanism were built as a cone chest. The organ was set up without a case in accordance with the taste of the time. The organ has a total of 23 sounding stops.
