Sebastian Chapel in Holzheim

The Catholic Chapel of St. Sebastian in Holzheim , a municipality in the district of Dillingen an der Donau in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , was built in 1716 on the Sebastiansberg, southeast of the town. In 2008 the chapel was given a copper onion dome again after its original baroque dome was replaced by a pointed helmet in 1875.

architecture

Tower with onion dome

In the northern corner of the choir rises the 25-meter-high tower, whose square, four-story substructure carries a two-story, octagonal structure with an onion dome. Glare fields with slit-like openings are cut into the substructure on all four sides, and large round-arched niches with coupled acoustic arcades are cut into the fourth floor . The tower octagon is divided into corner pilasters , glare fields and rectangular windows drawn in at the top and bottom.

The west facade is crowned by a baroque volute gable , which is closed off by a segmental arch . In the niche of the gable field there was probably a sculpture of St. Sebastian , the patron saint of the chapel. The outer walls of the nave and choir are structured by buttresses . The single-nave nave is pierced by oval windows and, like the choir, is covered by a basket arch barrel with stitch caps . The retracted, semicircular closed choir has high oval openings. A gallery resting on pillars forms the western end of the nave .

Stucco and ceiling painting

The stucco decor dates from 1720 and is attributed to the same artist who also carried out the stucco work for the parish church of St. Martin in Holzheim. The frescoes were probably created by Anton Wenzeslaus Haffe, who also worked in the Holzheim parish church. The large fresco in the nave depicts St. Sebastian, who is called upon to intercede by the parish. The theme of the choir fresco is Holzheim, which is under the protection of the saint. The tower of the parish church and the Sebastian chapel are clearly visible. Cartouches with inscriptions reflect the content of the requests addressed to St. Sebastian: "O servant of the Lord, O dear patron - Oh please God, that He graciously spares us" or "That God so often spares us people here - Sebastian We always have to thank ”.

Furnishing

In 1968 the majority of the sculptures, most of which were from the mid-18th century, were stolen from the church. The works that were preserved or that could be procured again are now kept in the parish church of St. Martin.
