St. Stephen (2008)

The former church of St. Stephanus stood on the edge of the western Essen district of Holsterhausen . It was designed by the architects Emil Jung and Josef Wingenfeld and designated in 1954. After the church was closed in 2008, construction was put down at the beginning of 2018.

Church building

The parish and parish patron was the Holy Martyr Stephen , patron saint on December 26th.

After the growth of the mother parish of St. Mary's Conception , the history of St. Stephen's church building began in 1914 with the first purchase of building land. The church building association was not founded until 1927, and in 1928 the property was doubled.

Work on the church building designed by the architect and master builder Emil Jung government began in 1929. In October 1930 he was benediziert and in the Second World War hit hard on 25 October 1944, a bomb attack and on 12 December 1944 finally destroyed.

The second church building was erected on the old foundations in the years 1952–1953, also by Emil Jung, together with Josef Wingenfeld, and assigned on September 19, 1954. The façades were clinkered in a manganese color in the 1970s.

In 2009 the church was profaned in the course of restructuring in the diocese of Essen . The last service took place on April 6, 2008.

A takeover of the church by a Serbian Orthodox community, which had been celebrating its services in the church since 2003, did not materialize. The building was therefore sold in 2011 to the Heimstatt Engelbert Foundation, which is now part of the Franz Sales House . An originally planned change of use did not make economic sense, so the demolition began at the beginning of 2018. On April 28, 2018, the church tower was blown up.

organ

In 2009 the organ was expanded, and it came to the Church of the Holy Family on Margarethenhöhe .

local community

On March 31, 1930, the pastoral care district was separated from the mother parish and raised to the status of an independent rectorate parish of St. Stephanus. In 1933 the rector, appointed in 1930, was made rectorate pastor. In 1941 the parish boundaries were reorganized, and in 1951 it was elevated to a canonical parish . On April 1, 2004, the parish was abolished and the parish was assigned to the parish of St. Mary's Conception, which in turn became part of the newly founded parish of St. Antonius on April 1, 2008 .
