The Church of St. Trinitatis is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liebenburg in the Lower Saxony district of Goslar . It was built in 1862/63 as a neo-Gothic brick building , including a medieval west bar , according to plans by Conrad Wilhelm Hase .

history

The church stands in the former village of Lewe , the earliest written mention of which comes from 1131 and which belonged to the Hildesheim monastery . It became the namesake of the Lewenborch ( Liebenburg ), the Bishop Siegfried II. West of the village lying range of hills built from 1292 on the few hundred meters. Below the castle hill, a servants' settlement was built, the Liebenburg Castle Freedom . When this settlement grew together with the old Lewe and was united with him in 1937, its name was transferred to the entire place. The historic village church is located on the eastern edge of today's Liebenburg.

On the western bars of the Church, the family coat of arms of Schwicheldt place with the year 1518. The core of the dry stone building should however be older and to a high medieval decline foundation. The earliest documented mention of the church is from 1305.

Lewe and the surrounding area came under Brunswick-Lüneburg rule in 1523 as a result of the Hildesheim collegiate feud . In 1568 the Lutheran Reformation was introduced. After the restoration of the Great Hildesheim Monastery in 1643, a new prince-bishop's palace complex with a Catholic palace church was built on the castle hill ; however, the village church remained Lutheran.

The population growth of the 19th century made it necessary to replace the old church with a larger new building. The royal building officer and consistorial master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase, a prominent representative of neo-Gothic in northern Germany, was entrusted with the design. The church was solemnly consecrated on November 8, 1863. Hase stayed in Liebenburg several times during the construction period. When his wife died in 1865, he married Ottilie Franziska Annette Amalie Berckelmann from Liebenburg two years later .

construction

Hase had two slate-covered tapered helmets attached to the old west wing, creating the impression of a double tower facade. He designed the nave as a cruciform basilica with narrow aisles, buttresses , a polygonal apse and galleries in the arms of the transept. The economical architectural jewelry is inspired by the north German brick Gothic. The interior is spanned by deep ribbed vaults .

Furnishing

Altar crucifix, pulpit and gallery parapets date from the time the church was built. The Liebenburg crown of thorns (1981) on the west wall and the resurrection angel with cross (1996) on the northern apse wall, both by Gerd Winner, set modern accents . The organ with 16 registers was built by the Hammer company in 1983 using three registers from the Heyder organ from 1863.
