The Catholic village church of St. Urbanus is a three-aisled hall church from the 19th century. It is located in the center of the village of Rhade , which has been a district of Dorsten (North Rhine-Westphalia) since 1975 . The church is the Pope Urban V ordained , who lived in the 14th century.

Exterior construction

It is a simple building, most of which is made of stone masonry. Only the eastern area shows z. T. brick masonry , it is a subsequent extension of the nave . The nave has arched windows in both the original and the attached part.

The three-story tower has moved into the nave. The upper sound openings are in the shape of biforias, two windows coupled by a central column, which are based on the Romanesque architectural style. The tower's pointed tent roof , like the nave roof, is slated .

Interior

The interior is designed as a three-aisled hall church. Round arches supported by simple columns separate the nave from the aisles. The barrel-shaped vault is structured by belt arches .

The Stockmann organ from 1998 and the sculpture of St. Urbanus, which dates from 1725, are particularly noteworthy.

Bells

The bell consists of three steel bells from 1922. They have been operated by an electric bell since 1957. Originally, St. Urbanus had three bronze bells, which were melted down for weapon production in the world wars.

Building history

A previous building was already mentioned in 1489. It was a small chapel with a choir and ship's yoke , which was probably built in the 14th century.

Construction of the current church began in 1839 after the old chapel had been demolished. The inauguration took place in 1841. In 1951, the church was expanded to the east to accommodate the increased population of Rhade. To do this, the choir wall was broken off. A new sacristy was also built on the north side. In the end, there was room for 290 worshipers in the extended building.

During a renovation in 1996, a new organ stage was created in the tower, and a new organ was installed two years later.
